When
it comes to planting bedding plants for the late summer to early autumn,
the Vinca really cannot be beaten in this area. The ‘Dynasty’ series
has seven hardy shades in the pink, cerise through apricot and white
range, all bred from Catharanthus rosea, which is a very tough plant from
Madagascar. |

A keen local gardener has been doing his own
trials with Leopard slugs and wrote to me with his observations, since it is
generally understood by gardeners that Leopard slugs are the good guys in
the garden. As a result of John’s trials and confirmation with Gastropod
expert at SA Museum, I can confirm that there are two types of Leopard slugs
and they have different habits.

I read on a folksy American gardening magazine
some ‘garden wisdom’ by Bernard Schofield that “baker’s yeast is
quite lethal on ants” and given the withdrawal of chlorpyrifos (the most
common active agent used in ant powders) in recent times, maybe our readers
would like to try this with some out-dated yeast. If you make your own
bread, it’s easy to accumulate out-dated yeast!

I’m not sure who hit on this great idea first,
but recently, Yates have launched a range of packet seed that carry two or
three sachets of seed inside one packet and they are branded Mexican with a
chillies and chives mix and another Mexican with the ensalada veggies
(lettuce, mixed onions and carrots). They have Asian, Indian and
Mediterranean seed kits too.
