Spring seems to have well and truly burst upon us in the past
week. Roses are starting to move and begging for attention. Time to spread
some nutrient around and if your soil is still a bit cold and many are, then
use water soluble fertilizers at first followed up by organic pellets if you
like.

It’s
time to start bluing your hydrangeas if that is your intention. The old
fashioned cultivars of hydrangea are renowned for flowering either pink in
alkaline soil or blue in acidic soil and the world over, what ever soil
gardeners have, they seek to change it. The agent of change is alum sold
as hydrangea bluing or various forms of garden lime sold as pinking
agents.

Now
that many of our spring bulbs have finished flowering, it’s timely to
remind gardeners that for bulbs such as daffodils, tulips, hyacinths and
freesias, you need to feed them before they dry off so that next year’s
flowers are assured. Otherwise they will regrow next winter, but their
flowers will be poor or absent. Use a fast acting water-soluble fertilizer
with a high potassium ratio.
