South Australia - November  2001

Select the date from the list shown below for this months tip

5th Nov. All this cool mild weather, has most plants growing pretty softly at present, so they will fall victim to all sorts of insect sap suckers and chewing caterpillars over the next few weeks.
12th Nov. Time to plant Sweet Basil for those summer salads and Italian tomato dishes and savouries. Find a well drained site with lots of sun and protected from the wind. They need plenty of liquid fertilizer, but if using animal wastes as a diluted tea, keep it off the leaves!
19th Nov. Have you noticed the odd dry brown branch on your Pencil Pines and other Cypress hedges at present? Remove the branch and at the base you will see a hollow centre has been eaten out recently. The larva of the "Cypress Bark Weevil" is the culprit.
26th Nov. Last week I suggested drenching your Pencil Pines with Confidor or Rogor to eradicate the pernicious "Cypress Bark Weevil" however it seems that the term ‘drenching’ is not widely understood in urban Adelaide (not enough Cockies sorry read that as farmer and grazier if you are not Australian) out there these days eh?).
