I know that a few weeks ago I promised an ‘arm-chair
month’ in June, but it’s only just June and there’re still too many things
to do in the garden, so next week, maybe.

As promised, armchair gardening this week and
its water and salinity and what to do about it. We garden in a Mediterranean
climate here, which has some unique peculiarities. For instance rain that
falls in winter and little in the warm summer, when most plants want to
grow. So in our climate plants have to make the bulk of their growth in
autumn and spring unless you supplement water in summer. The reticulated
water you are likely to use is already loaded with salt of at least 700
parts per million so the more water you add the more saline your soil
becomes, due to its inherent clay structure.

Armchair
gardening this week is soil pH and what to do about it. The pH is the
level of acidity or alkalinity in your soil and how it has a profound
effect on the vigour of many of your favourite plants, especially in this
area. First step to solving your pH problems is to buy a pH testing kit.

Still
armchair gardening this week after all the recent rain. Isn’t it great
to see SA Water deprived of some income, however small? Time to read and
be inspired.
