Armchair gardening this week is the rise and rise of
fungal diseases in our gardens. My Father only ever used sulphur forty years
ago, but these days it’s simply not good enough on its own.

Our soil is now about as saturated as it is
likely to get this year. Sure we will get more rain but we will also get
fine days and the drying out commences. Now is the optimum time to improve
your drainage and condition that heavy clay that passes as soil in this
region.

Soil
temperature in the Campbell vegetable patch was 110C all last
week and in the many containers I have, a remarkably consistent 9.50C
at 8am each day. So what you may ask?

We
have a worm farm to consume all the vegetable scraps and with a student
vego in the household, that’s a considerable bulk at times. In winter
things slow down underground and worms need a protein supplement to keep
wriggling.

Aren’t
the Jonquils lovely at the moment? Who’d go out of their way to plant
them back in autumn, but now everyone wants a few. The prolific double
white is ‘EarliCheer’ and all the white and creams forms have richer
fragrance to my nose than the yellow forms. They almost out-compete
"Soursobs" too.
