- Aren’t the Jonquils lovely at the moment? Who’d go out of their way to
plant them back in autumn, but now everyone wants a few. The prolific double
white is ‘EarliCheer’ and all the white and creams forms have richer
fragrance to my nose than the yellow forms. They almost out-compete
"Soursobs" too.
- I planted some rocket and coriander seed a few months ago and had the
first pick of the rocket on the weekend and the last of the basil, before it
was pulled. The coriander has been getting picked for weeks. All this was
the result of $4.50 worth of seed and it must have saved us several hundred
dollars at the greengrocers! Not too late to plant rocket, chervil or
coriander.
- I pulled my last year’s Hollyhocks out reluctantly on the weekend too.
They were totally consumed with orange rust pustules, but still flowering
defiantly. I have young seedlings coming on that will flower soon and
amazingly they have no rust.
- My Poppies and Pansies are looking a little lacking in nitrogen (slight
yellowing of their leaves) after all the wet and cool weather, so applied
some water soluble nutrient on the weekend. They already look better, so don’t
overlook a quick examination of your bedding plants this week..
- Time to divide or plant Rhubarb and asparagus. The crowns are in the
stores at the moment and both thrive in this area. Rhubarb in part shade and
asparagus in full sun. Feed both with superphosphate at planting.
- I discovered the coolest and easiest extension risers to the classic
Stratco® rail and post fence. Invented and made only in SA they make an
extra half a metre on top of your fence, for climbers to scramble on. Yes
and I paid for mine!
