South Australia - April  2001

Select the date from the list shown below for this months tip

2nd April

It’s Petunia-pulling time and although you may still have a reasonable display in your bedding scheme, the longer they are left there and the longer it is before your Pansies are planted to poorer your display will be. These few weeks of warm soil add months to the display in late winter and spring.

9th April

Time to round up all those old pots in the shed and clean a few to make a winter display. Staged on a veranda or even at the front door, they just need sun in the morning right through winter to thrive. Even plants that may struggle in the ground will flower well in pots due to the warmer media.

16th April

It seems there is a lot of interest in this area at present with how to kill your poplars, ivy, morning glory, convolvulus and similar invasive woody vines and creepers. If you’ve tried glyphosate, you know that’s useless. You need a solution with triclopyr in at as the active agent. Often sold as ‘Axit’ or various "Blackberry and Poplar Killers". The locally made "CRC Tree Killer" has 50 grams per litre of active agent and as such is the best value for money.
23rd April

Hydrangeas looking ratty? Resist the temptation to prune for a few months. Spray with 1% Neem Oil to control powdery mildew and the bushes will still store vital nutrients and potassium in particular in their root systems to astound you with flower come December.
30th April

It’s a good time to spray your grape vines with a light miscible oil such as winter oil or PestOil™, that protects your vines from any early break of fungal diseases in spring. No matter that most of the foliage will be pruned off in 2 months. Right now its good protection and what’s more, cheap to apply.
