  • I noticed that my liliums are budding right now and that they are now in need of a dose of iron chelates mixed with kelp extract to turn their slightly yellow buds, bright green and to ward off the odd hot day before they flower next month.
  • The same treatment needs to be applied to the Hardenbergia climber on the fence, that I dumped some soil on during the winter and is now in a state of growth, drawing on the fairly alkaline soil rather than its usual well mulched acidic root run.
  • This is the time of year when your container plants are put under their first wave of heat stress and you can either move them somewhere to get less intense sunlight or treat them with seaweed or kelp extracts. Even doing both is not excessive.
  • Vegetables to sow now with confidence are French, Dwarf and Climbing Beans, any Pumpkins, Cucumbers, Melons, Eggplant, Okra, Cauliflower, Potatoes and of course Tomatoes.
  • Herbs such as Basil and Parsley need to go in now. Remember that Parsley runs to seed every two years then dies, so even if yours looks a treat right now it won’t this time next year, so plan ahead!
  • My Roses certainly need a spray to control rampant powdery mildew at present, due to the above average watering they have had over the past four weeks and the size of the weeds near them, so if you have similar conditions you might look critically at yours. Even if you are letting the weeds run rampant, don’t let the thistles loose, they harbour far too many diseases and pests.
