Armchair gardening this week is the rise and rise of fungal diseases in our gardens. My Father only ever used sulphur forty years ago, but these days it’s simply not good enough on its own.

 

 

10th July

 

Our soil is now about as saturated as it is likely to get this year. Sure we will get more rain but we will also get fine days and the drying out commences. Now is the optimum time to improve your drainage and condition that heavy clay that passes as soil in this region.


 

19th July
We have a worm farm to consume all the vegetable scraps and with student vego in the household, that’s a considerable bulk at times. In winter things slow down underground and worms need a protein supplement to keep wriggling.

Aren’t the Jonquils lovely at the moment? Who’d go out of their way to plant them back in autumn, but now everyone wants a few. The prolific double white is ‘EarliCheer’ and all the white and creams forms have richer fragrance to my nose than the yellow forms. They almost out-compete "Soursobs" too.
