  • We have a worm farm to consume all the vegetable scraps and with student vego in the household, that’s a considerable bulk at times. In winter things slow down underground and worms need a protein supplement to keep wriggling.
  • I heard they like bran and last week when I brought oat bran for Annies’ muesli mix, instead of her preferred wheat bran, the worms were presented with a bonanza, better than the dog’s old woollen blanket to keep their winter farmyard warm.
  • I was reminded of once going into a health store and asking for 5 kilos of bran and the amused attendant asking me what I needed 5 kilos for, so I answered "for my worms". When the change was handed over the by-now very serious attendant said "have you tried Combatrim?" I concluded that not everyone keeps worms, some just have them.
  • My worms are "Red wrigglers" and they make a most amazing liquid in the sump of their farm, that gets drained monthly onto all my pot plants and special seedlings. Every single plant seems to love it and turn a bright green the day after. I’ve no idea what is in it that makes such an impression, but I see some companies are now marketing the stuff.
  • The worm castings and soil-like goo, that’s the by-product of a lot of worm-foolery, went out onto a patch of vegetable garden last week with the odd worm, to no avail because they die out there.
  • The "red Wrigglers" can’t compete with the earthworms you know because of course they only eat rotting vegies and there are no vegetable straps for them in my vegie garden. They do however provide an easy-pick meal for a few grateful blackbirds though. Ah well it’s an ill worm that does not good.
