With all this warm weather, it's easy to be lulled along into thinking that nothing is happening in the vegetable garden. If you do, you will miss your autumn crops of broccoli, watercress, radish, red beet, kohl rabi, cabbage and cauliflower.

This month is your last chance to sow seed for a reliable crop of carrots, dwarf beans, cucumbers, zucchini and sunflowers. If you want late tomatoes I'd be planting 'Burley Bounty' seedlings and a few of the 'Cherry Cocktail' climbers over the next week.

The bulb catalogues are all in the post at present and the pale pink double tulip 'Angelique' was my best tulip last year. I see there is a deeper pink added to the Tesselaar range this year, called 'Sven Dahlman'. Both do not need to be given the crisper treatment. They flower mid to late September.

Dutch Iris are certainly worth a try if you are new to gardening too. They are really easy. A deep royal blue variety called 'Viscount' takes some beating and when contrasted with the bright golden blooms of 'Golden Beauty', it's a winning combination.
