After the hot spells we expect this month, it will be time to feed the lawns too. They've certainly taken a hammering with heat and they loose the vigour easily. An organic or water soluble fertiliser can be used this month. My dog won't let be use the organic pellets, because he eats them as fast as I spread them!

Flowers to start the petunia replacement program with, are Antirrhinum 'Camelot' and the 'Excalibur' series. Close to rust resistant, they are compact and will be into flower in about five weeks at this time of year and go on flowering until spring.

Lettuce is certainly worth a few more punnets and the 'Combo' pack has the varieties in it that will not bolt to seed when planted at this time of year. After a week, start feeding the seedlings with nitrogen of some sort. Pee in a bucket and add five volumes of water, if there's nothing else in the garden shed.

Did you loose a lot of pot plants from neglect, while away on leave this year? Why not seriously look at a water garden. Large ceramic or terra cotta bowls or pots with water lilies and aquatic plants that flower and don't need watering for months on end! Even a shallow bowl with bog plants. Visit Amaroo Water Gardens at Hope Forest near Willunga for inspiration.
