You’ve probably noticed some of your plants are looking a bit yellow at present, Hibiscus in particular and it’s not an iron deficiency. The all over yellow leaf is indicative of a shortage of nitrogen.

 

 

14th August


Keep an eye on your pot plants. It’s surprising at this time of year, with a few sunny days, how they dry out so quickly. Especially those with bulbs that are now in a state of growth. So water them at least weekly.

Two weeks ago I suggested that you control the "Woollybear Caterpillars" that were and still are eating their way through our gardens by spraying either Carbaryl or a softer option of spraying the Bacillus thuringiensis bacteria marketed by several companies as Dipel® HG. A local nursery person, who suggested that it was not a control for "Woollybear Caterpillar", because it is not on the label, challenged that suggestion.

I had a contractor in six weeks ago who stacked a pile of soil against a grapevine trunk and when removing it last weekend I discovered the bark had already started to rot. That highlights the need not to change soil levels around existing plants.
