September 6th


Roses should be really starting to move with fresh growth after spring rain and mild days, so it's time to start feeding them with water soluble fertilisers, rich in potassium. Any of the special Rose fertilisers are excellent and any of the others are acceptable.

September 13th

Weeds of all persuasions are germinating this month . Now you can really mess up their day by something as simple as some light tillage around your treasured plants.

E.F. Schumacher with his 'Small is beautiful' dictum, really got it right when you come to think of its implications in the garden. If you are starting a garden, start with a small area, small fruit, vegetable and flower cultivars and small tools. As your passion grows everything else can too.



September 27th


Protection is the name of the garden game in spring. Everything is growing fast and the insects multiplying rapidly as the weather warms and fungal diseases spread with the humidity. No time to rest. Thank God for longer days.
