| Now that most Cyclamen have finished
flowering, but are still in a state of growth, is a good time to report them if you feel
they need a larger container. Make sure to keep the top of the corm out of soil. They go
dormant in a month, so don't fret when they look like they're dying! This is a good time to be starting a lawn from seed. Watch out for
seed packs that boast of adding fertiliser to the seed. Seed is much more expensive than
fertiliser by weight. You're generally getting ripped off! Demand seed alone and
fertiliser alone, not mixed.
Early response from lawn fertiliser on your lawn is
achieved using water soluble fertiliser, then follow up with organic if you like, but soil
temperatures are still pretty low for organic fertiliser to give you a quick response. Add
both and you'll be astounded, since very few gardeners every over fertilise a lawn.
If you notice dandelions starting to appear in your lawn,
spot spray with glyphosate or if you are active, use a long kitchen knife to extract their
long tap root. Dandelions are in the lettuce family and are very hungry feeders.
A friend gave me some potted seedlings he'd raised the
other day and when planting them I noticed lots of Indian Blue Worms in his home- brew
soil mix. I'd wondered how this worm diversity occurred in our gardens, now I know. That's
not a problem by the way, since they feed in a different way from the compost and earth
worms. Peaceful co-existence... Om..
I still think it's too early for tomatoes. I say that every
year and I still get testimonials thanking me for the advice. A tomato seedling planted
into a 10cm (4") pot and held back or stunted for the next three weeks before
planting, will flower and fruit sooner than the same batch of seedlings planted anytime
over the next three weeks. Try it. |
