South Australia - November 1999

Select the date from the list shown below for this months tip

November 1st

Expect rain and humidity this monthy, with that we can expect outbreaks of fungal disease over the next few weeks. If you have prized plants such as roses that you aim to protect, you will need a rotation of at least three sprays. Use water soluble Sulfine, followed by Kocide™ and then BaycorŽ or Bordeaux mix. That way the fungi do not mutate to resist the spray.

The district's loquats are ripe and the rats are on the move. Don't tell me you don't have rats, this area is riddled with nocturnal rats, out to eat your fruit. Most of our local councils supply rat poison at this time of year, because the problem is widespread. Don't be coy, ask for it or else we all suffer.

November 15th

Sow Sunflowers from seed now, for a summer and autumn display. You will find that to get a staged effected you will need more than one variety since they all grow to different heights.

November 22nd

With Christmas looming and warm weather now the norm, it's a great time to fertilizer your lawns. Even a scruffy old Kikuyu will respond in a week and look great for festive slumming, when fertilized this week. Water first feed, then rewater.

If you planted pumpkins, cucumbers and melons when I prompted you, they will be making lots of tendrils, so now it the time for the cruellest cut. Now is the time to remove the leading tips, so that the male flower development gets curtailed and the productive female flowers, lower down, start to be encouraged and develop into melons or whatever.
