During the recent hot weather you probably noticed your French Beans would not form, but the flowers aborted and fell off. That’s not because the bees will not work on days of 39°C, it’s a natural response by nature, who thinks it’s just too darn hot to bother! Beans are self pollinating, they don’t need bees.


 

Jan 18th


Annie’s accusing me of arboricide (the noun for a tree killer) after my attempts at hardening-off the "Norwegian Spruce" Christmas tree. I still think it will recover, but things are not looking good. I’ve used a wetting agent on the soil media and a seaweed extract to revive it. Just a few hours in the morning sun and it turned brown your Honour. The jury is still out!


Jan 22nd

The succulent red-stemmed weed popping up all around the garden after the hot weather and cooler spell is "Purslane" Portulaca oleracea, which is used by herbalists as a salad vegetable.
