If youve noticed how some of your plants have traces of purple on their leaves at
present, when they are normally green, its caused by a short-term potassium
deficiency at this time of the year.

Youve probably noticed some of your
plants are looking a bit yellow at present, Hibiscus in particular and its not an
iron deficiency. The all over yellow leaf is indicative of a shortage of nitrogen.

Keep an eye on your pot plants. Its
surprising at this time of year, with a few sunny days, how they dry out so quickly.
Especially those with bulbs that are now in a state of growth. So water them at least
weekly.

Two weeks ago I suggested that you control the
"Woollybear Caterpillars" that were and still are eating their way through our
gardens by spraying either Carbaryl or a softer option of spraying the Bacillus
thuringiensis bacteria marketed by several companies as DipelŪ HG. A local nursery
person, who suggested that it was not a control for "Woollybear Caterpillar",
because it is not on the label, challenged that suggestion. |

I had a contractor in six weeks ago who
stacked a pile of soil against a grapevine trunk and when removing it last weekend I
discovered the bark had already started to rot. That highlights the need not to change
soil levels around existing plants. |
