 Explain sprouts

  • Seed that emerges, needs moisture oxygen, light, warmth & humidity
  • Nutritious, but soy beans need heat before being eaten

What to try:

  • Sow direct onto wet pad

·         Cress and mustard 4-5 days in summer 8-10 in winter

·         Fenugreek [Methi] 3-5 days only in summer

             Pre soak hours and drain

·         Wheat 8-10 hours (grows 3-6 days)

·         Rocket 5-10 hours (10-15 days)

·         Alfalfa or Lucerne 8-12 hours (3-5 days)

·         Broccoli 10-12 hours (4-5 days & very expensive)

·         Mung beans 8-10 hours (3-4 days)

·         Sunflower (hulled seed) 8-10 hours (2 days)

·         Red clover 7-9 hours (3-5 days)

·         Brown lentils 9-12 hours (3-4 days)

Techniques

  • Square jar, daily routine
  • Drip tray or saucer
  • Tray with rock wool
  • Hydroponic sprouts
  • Use hot water system as a heat bed or well ventilated laundry
  • Buy bulk seed from health stores, continental grocers or market garden suppliers, rather than nurseries and commercial seed merchants except Erica Vale. Caution if dusted with fungicide!
